In a major development in the ongoing inheritance dispute over the estate of late industrialist.
Sunjay Kapur, his widow Priya Sachdev has told the Delhi High Court that it is a “healthy tradition” for a husband to leave all his assets to his wife. Her counsel argued on Thursday that even Sunjay’s father had followed the same precedent, bequeathing his entire estate to his wife, Rani Kapur.
“There is nothing suspicious about a husband giving all his assets to his wife. Sunjay’s father did the same in his own will. It is a healthy tradition that appears to have been maintained,” senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, representing Priya Sachdev, told the court.
Nayar further submitted that a draft of Sunjay Kapur’s will had been shown to him in February this year, prior to his death. According to Priya’s legal team, Sunjay suggested certain changes, which were incorporated in the final version dated March 17, 2025.
What Is the Legal Dispute?
Following Sunjay Kapur’s death, a bitter family battle has erupted over his will and assets. His children with Karisma Kapoor — Samaira and Kiaan — have approached the Delhi High Court seeking a share in their late father’s estate. They have alleged that their stepmother, Priya Sachdev, forged the will to gain full control over the assets.
The children also recently filed a fresh plea requesting the court to restrain Priya from transferring or altering any of Sunjay’s assets until the case is settled. While Karisma Kapoor is not a party to the case, she is representing her children in the proceedings.
Sunjay’s Sister Hits Out at Priya Sachdev
Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur, has publicly accused Priya Sachdev of repeatedly seeking secrecy in the inheritance process. In a recent interview on the podcast InControversial with Pooja Chadhuri, she called Priya a “fraud” and questioned her conduct.
“You wanted an NDA. You wanted the will in a sealed envelope. And now you don’t want a forensic test. What are you hiding?” she said, vowing to challenge Priya’s claims in court.
“This is not her money. This is theft. This is fraud. And the country needs to see it,” she added.
