Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s blistering 78 powers Royals, earns high praise from Shashi Tharoor.
Teen prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi lit up the Indian Premier League with a stunning display of power-hitting, smashing Royal Challengers Bengaluru and leaving Shashi Tharoor in awe.
The 15-year-old from Bihar’s Samastipur hammered 78 off just 26 balls to guide Rajasthan Royals to a commanding six-wicket win while chasing 202. The Royals completed the chase in 18 overs, with Sooryavanshi’s breathtaking 15-ball half-century effectively sealing the contest.
Fearless, dominant, unstoppable
At an age when most teenagers are occupied with exams, Sooryavanshi was dismantling a seasoned bowling attack with remarkable authority. His innings included eight fours and seven sixes — 74 of his 78 runs coming in boundaries — as he combined explosive bat speed with exceptional timing.
What stood out was not just the aggression, but the control. There was a calmness to his approach even as he took apart bowlers of the highest quality.
Tharoor hails ‘generational talent’
Tharoor, who followed the innings closely, took to social media to heap praise on the youngster, calling him a “rare, generational talent.”
He marvelled at Sooryavanshi’s bat speed, timing and raw power, describing his innings as a glimpse into the future of batting. The Congress MP added that watching the teenager at the crease felt “breathtaking,” admitting he found himself glued to every delivery.
Taking on the best with ease
Sooryavanshi’s knock showcased both power and adaptability. Having already impressed against Jasprit Bumrah earlier this season, he continued his fearless approach against Josh Hazlewood.
Hazlewood attempted to cramp him for room with tight lines, but Sooryavanshi responded with ease — carving boundaries and dispatching deliveries into the stands. Against Abhinandan Singh, he even converted a yorker-length delivery into a towering six, underlining his extraordinary bat speed.
A star rising fast
Even after being caught by Virat Kohli, the outcome was never in doubt. Rajasthan Royals were already cruising, thanks to the platform he had set.
After a promising debut IPL season at 14, Sooryavanshi has taken a significant leap this year. In a format where a strike rate of 200 is considered elite, the teenager is operating well above that mark — and doing it with a freedom and confidence that sets him apart.
If this performance is any indication, Indian cricket could be witnessing the emergence of a truly special talent.
