Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Faces Fresh Delay, April 30 Release in Doubt

Fans eager to watch Vijay’s final film before his full-time political plunge may need to brace for a longer wait.

Jana Nayagan is now unlikely to hit theatres before April 30, adding another layer of uncertainty to its ongoing certification battle. The latest confirmation did not come from the makers but from overseas distributor York Cinemas, which announced that the film will not release before April 30. The statement, shared on its official X handle, triggered fresh disappointment among international fans.

Distributor Confirms Fresh Delay

Posting under the caption, “Important Announcement of Jananayagan. From York Cinemas Management,” the distributor wrote:

“Dear Patrons, Please note that the movie Jana Nayagan will not be releasing before April 30th. If you have any pending tickets and your refund has not yet been processed, kindly contact our theatres to have it arranged at the earliest.”

It further added that loyal membership holders would receive priority booking access once a new release date is finalised.

The statement did not specify a revised date, only making it clear that the much-anticipated release will not happen this month.

Certification Row With CBFC

The delay stems from the film’s dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Originally slated for a January 9 release, Jana Nayagan ran into certification hurdles, prompting its makers to approach the Madras High Court. On January 27, a division bench set aside an earlier January 9 order by a single judge that had directed the CBFC to certify the film. The bench ruled that the board should have been given time to file its counter and sent the matter back for reconsideration.

In February, producer KVN Productions withdrew its petition seeking directions to the CBFC to grant a censor certificate, paving the way for the revising committee to examine the film.

As of now, the film remains uncertified. Neither the production house nor the CBFC has issued a fresh statement.

Elections Complicate Release Plans

Adding to the uncertainty is the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly election schedule beginning in April. With Vijay expected to formally enter the electoral fray through his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, the timing of the release carries added political weight.

A pre-election theatrical launch now appears increasingly unlikely.

Directed by H. Vinoth and backed by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani. The film is reportedly a remake of the 2023 Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari.

For now, Jana Nayagan remains in limbo — and fans continue to wait for an official announcement on its release date.
