Timely Boost for India: Shubman Gill Discharged Ahead of Second Test

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata, offering the team a crucial boost ahead of the second Test against South Africa.

Gill had been admitted with a neck injury on Saturday, a setback that proved costly as India slipped to a 30-run defeat on a difficult Eden Gardens pitch. Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly visited Gill at the hospital on Sunday, hours after India’s batting collapse left them 0–1 down in the two-match series.

Gill sustained the injury while batting on Day 2 and was ruled out of the remainder of the first Test. His absence was felt immediately—he was unavailable for India’s second innings, in which the side folded for just 93 on a surface offering uneven bounce.

Ahead of Day 3, the BCCI confirmed that Gill would not take further part in the match.
“Captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2. He was taken to the hospital for further assessment and will not participate in the remainder of the Test. He remains under the supervision of the BCCI medical team,” the board said.

Gill was stretchered into an ambulance and taken to the hospital late on November 15, shortly after retiring hurt. The injury occurred after he swept spinner Simon Harmer for a boundary and immediately felt discomfort, prompting on-field treatment before he walked off.

With the second Test beginning on November 22 in Guwahati, the team management has not yet finalised Gill’s availability. The squad is scheduled to travel on Tuesday.
