At least 25 killed in Goa nightclub fire, PM and President express grief
At least 25 people lost their lives in a devastating fire at Birch by Romeo Lane, a popular nightclub in Baga, North Goa, in the early hours of Sunday, following a suspected cylinder blast, police said. The club is located in Arpora village, about 25 km from Panaji, the state capital.
Goa Police confirmed that among the deceased were 14 staff members, four tourists, and seven victims whose identities are yet to be confirmed. Six people were injured and are receiving treatment. Initial reports suggest the nightclub violated fire safety norms, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.
According to Goa DGP, the fire broke out around 12:04 am, and police, fire brigade, and ambulance teams were immediately dispatched. Videos circulating on social media show flames engulfing the club rapidly.
Political leaders respond
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who visited the site, said most victims were kitchen staff, including three women, with a few tourists also among the dead. Sawant promised strict action against the club management and officials responsible for flouting safety regulations.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed grief on X, offering condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed sorrow and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Modi stated that the Goa government is providing all possible assistance to those affected.
BJP MLA Michael Lobo said the incident highlighted the urgent need for a safety audit of all clubs in Goa. He noted that most victims died from suffocation while trying to escape through the basement and emphasized that tourist and staff safety must be prioritized.
