Trump Withdraws Canada’s Invitation to ‘Board of Peace’ Following Davos Clash
US President Donald Trump on Friday withdrew an invitation for Canada to join his proposed “Board of Peace”, following Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s public criticism of US tariffs linked to Washington’s Greenland ambitions. The move marks a fresh escalation in tensions between the two longtime allies, already strained after sharp exchanges at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
Trump shared the revocation in a post on Truth Social, posting the text of a formal letter to Carney:
“Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.”
The Board of Peace is an initiative championed by Trump as a high-level forum of global leaders to resolve international conflicts, though its structure and mandate remain unclear.
Davos Exchange
The withdrawal came after Carney delivered a keynote at WEF warning that the global rules-based order was fracturing. Trump responded sharply:
“They should be grateful to us, Canada. Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
Carney, without directly naming Trump or the US, stressed that the world faces a fundamental rupture, not a transition, and that major powers increasingly use tariffs and economic tools as leverage.
Canada Responds
Carney rebutted Trump’s claim on X, writing:
“Canada thrives because we are Canadian… We have a remarkable partnership with the United States, but Canada does not live because of the United States.”
The incident follows a series of provocative acts by Trump, including sharing an AI-generated image depicting Canada and Greenland as part of the United States, which drew international concern.
