Trump Threatens 50% Tariff, Decertifies Canadian Jets in Trade Escalation
US President Donald Trump has escalated a trade dispute with Canada, threatening a 50% tariff on all Canadian aircraft sold to the US and ordering the decertification of Bombardier jets. The move comes amid tensions over the certification of Gulfstream business jets.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said the measures would remain in effect until Canada approves Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 models. He accused Ottawa of wrongfully blocking certification, delaying Gulfstream sales in Canada for years.
“We are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all aircraft made in Canada, until Gulfstream, a Great American Company, is fully certified,” Trump wrote. He warned that failure to act could trigger a 50% tariff on all Canadian planes entering the US.
Bombardier operates major manufacturing facilities in Canada, while Gulfstream is a top US business jet maker. The dispute comes amid reports that the Trump administration met with an Albertan separatist movement, adding diplomatic tensions.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stressed sovereignty:
“We expect the US administration to respect Canadian sovereignty. I make this clear in all my conversations with President Trump.”
This move continues Trump’s strategy of using tariffs as leverage, following a recent executive order targeting countries supplying oil to Cuba.
