Trump Announces US Will Boycott G20 Summit Over Treatment of White Farmers in South Africa

President Donald Trump on Friday confirmed that no US government officials would attend the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) summit in South Africa later this month, citing concerns over Pretoria’s treatment of white farmers.

Trump had previously said he would not attend the November 22–23 summit, and Vice President JD Vance had been expected to represent the US. However, sources confirmed that Vance will no longer travel to South Africa.

Trump wrote on his social media platform, “It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa. Afrikaners—people descended from Dutch, French, and German settlers—are being killed, and their land and farms are being illegally confiscated. No US Government Official will attend as long as these human rights abuses continue. I look forward to hosting the 2026 G20 in Miami, Florida!”

The Trump administration has frequently criticised South Africa, alleging discrimination and violence against minority white farmers. Earlier this year, the US also prioritised white South Africans in its sharply reduced refugee intake of 7,500.

South African officials have dismissed Trump’s claims. President Cyril Ramaphosa said the reports of systematic persecution of white farmers are “completely false,” noting that white citizens continue to enjoy higher living standards than most Black South Africans decades after apartheid.

Trump has continued to press his criticism. In a recent speech in Miami, he suggested that South Africa should be removed from the G20. The move echoes a similar US protest in February, when Secretary of State Marco Rubio boycotted a G20 foreign ministers’ meeting over an agenda focused on diversity, inclusion, and climate change.
