The Legend Behind Tulsi Vivah

According to Hindu scriptures, Vrinda was a devoted wife of demon king Jalandhar. Her devotion and purity made Jalandhar invincible, even against the gods. To restore balance, Lord Vishnu took the form of Jalandhar and deceived Vrinda. When she realised the truth, she cursed Vishnu to turn into a black stone — the Shaligram. Filled with remorse, Vishnu promised to marry Vrinda in her next birth when she would be reborn as the sacred Tulsi plant. Their union is commemorated every year as Tulsi Vivah, symbolising devotion, purity, and divine love.

Tulsi Vivah Vidhi (Rituals)

Preparation: Clean the house and decorate the courtyard or puja area with flowers and lights.

Mandap Setup: Place the Tulsi plant (in a decorated pot) and the Shaligram stone under a small canopy (mandap).

Offerings: Adorn the Tulsi plant with a red sari or dupatta, turmeric, vermilion, and floral garlands. Offer sandalwood paste, rice, and fruits.

Shaligram Puja: Place Shaligram beside Tulsi and perform rituals with turmeric, yellow flowers, milk, and sesame seeds.

Marriage Ritual: Tie a sacred thread (mangalsutra) between Tulsi and Shaligram while reciting mantras or the Mangala Ashtakam.

Aarti & Prayers: Perform aarti for Tulsi and Vishnu and circumambulate the Tulsi plant 11 times.

Conclusion: Offer prasadam and seek blessings for happiness, peace, and prosperity.
