After 10 Days on the Run, Samarth Singh Surrenders in Jabalpur Amid Courtroom Chaos in Twisha Sharma Death Case

Samarth Singh, husband of deceased Noida woman Twisha Sharma, dramatically surfaced at a court in Jabalpur on Friday and was taken into police custody after remaining absconding for 10 days in the high-profile case that has sparked outrage and calls for a CBI investigation.

The surrender proceedings unfolded amid confusion and chaos inside the court premises. While Samarth’s lawyer had earlier announced that his client would surrender before the court, there was uncertainty as he allegedly moved between multiple courtrooms while police personnel waited outside. He was eventually detained by Jabalpur Police and is being taken to Bhopal for further investigation.

The situation turned more dramatic when advocate Anurag Srivastav, appearing for Twisha Sharma’s family, claimed he unexpectedly found Samarth sitting inside a dark courtroom while attending court for another matter.

According to Srivastav, the accused was seated comfortably inside the courtroom with lights switched off and wearing a mask, while the judge was absent from the dais. “There were three clerks present. I asked them under what authority he was being kept there, but no one answered. As soon as Samarth Singh saw me, he ran away and his lawyers pushed me aside,” the advocate alleged.

The claims triggered fresh questions over the manner in which the surrender was being handled and why the accused was allegedly shifting between courtrooms instead of appearing before the designated trial court in Bhopal.

Speaking outside the court, Srivastav said the Madhya Pradesh High Court had clearly directed Samarth Singh to surrender either before the trial court in Bhopal or before the investigating officer at Katara Hills Police Station. He questioned the legality of attempting surrender proceedings in a district court in Jabalpur and alleged that the accused, whom he referred to as the son of a retired judge, was receiving special treatment.

Twisha Sharma’s father also alleged intimidation and disorder inside the court premises. “Our lawyer was assaulted. This is shameful. Samarth could only surrender before the trial court. They are making a mockery of the judiciary,” he told India Today.

Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh High Court, while allowing withdrawal of Samarth Singh’s anticipatory bail plea, had granted him liberty to surrender before the trial court and seek regular bail. The court clarified that if he surrendered before the investigating officer, police could arrest and interrogate him for up to 24 hours before producing him before a competent court.

Twisha Sharma, 33, was found dead at her marital home in Bhopal on May 12. While the post-mortem report concluded death by suicide, her family has accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide, rejecting the findings and alleging foul play. The Singh family, meanwhile, claimed Twisha struggled with drug addiction.

In a significant development, the court has also permitted a second autopsy after Twisha’s family sought another examination, arguing that crucial aspects may have been overlooked. The body is currently preserved at AIIMS Bhopal mortuary.

The developments come hours after the Madhya Pradesh government formally recommended a CBI probe into the case, authorising transfer of the investigation to the central agency.
