Michael Vaughan Slams England’s Cockiness After Ashes Rout: “Australia Are Laughing at Them”
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has heavily criticised the national team following their fourth consecutive Ashes defeat in Australia. Ben Stokes’ side was outplayed by 82 runs in the third Test at Adelaide, giving Australia an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
Writing in The Telegraph, Vaughan said England’s approach had been badly exposed and described the team’s attitude as overconfident over the past three years.
“The whole approach of this England side has been badly exposed on this Ashes tour. Heads will roll after a defeat like this. Losing inside 11 days is the worst I can remember in Australia. England have had a cockiness about them for three years, and the entire cricketing world has wanted to shut them up. This tour has been humbling for them,” Vaughan wrote.
He also criticised the persistence of England’s aggressive ‘Bazball’ batting strategy in conditions that demanded a more traditional, disciplined approach.
“The Aussies are laughing. They can’t believe how fragile this team has been given the talent in the side. England have been told for four years that this style would work in Australia. I don’t know where that came from. The only teams I’ve seen win here grind the opposition down and have a disciplined bowling unit. We have neither,” Vaughan added.
England’s Struggles in Australia
England’s defeat in Adelaide extends their losing streak in Australia to four consecutive Tests. Their last victory Down Under came in 2011 under Andrew Strauss, when they retained the Ashes 3-1. Since then, England have played 18 Tests in Australia, losing 16 and drawing two.
With two matches remaining in the series, Ben Stokes and his side will aim to salvage pride and try to end their prolonged losing run. England last won the Ashes at home in 2015, while Australia has retained the urn four times since then, including their 2017–18 series win in Australia.
