Trump Reacts to Missing Nobel Peace Prize: Says Machado Accepted It “in His Honour”

US President Donald Trump responded on Friday after missing out on the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, claiming that Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado accepted the award “in his honour.”

“The person who got the Nobel Prize called me today and said, ‘I’m accepting this in your honour because you deserved it,’ which was a very nice gesture,” Trump said. Adding humor to his remark, he quipped, “I did not say then, ‘Give it to me,’ though,” prompting laughter among those present. He also emphasized his role in assisting Machado and said, “I am happy because I saved millions of lives.”

Following the announcement, social media platform X saw a flood of posts showing Trump looking disappointed, with captions mocking his reaction to missing the award.

Machado dedicated her Nobel Peace Prize not only to the Venezuelan people but also to Trump. She wrote on X, “I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!”

The White House criticized the Nobel Committee’s decision, alleging that politics outweighed merit. Spokesperson Steven Cheung said on X: “President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”

Trump has consistently claimed he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his efforts to broker eight international peace deals, including agreements between Israel and Gaza and the four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan in May. He described the latter as being largely resolved through trade measures, including tariff threats, which led both sides to stop fighting.

While Trump has repeatedly credited himself for resolving conflicts, India has strongly dismissed his claims regarding the ceasefire.

Maria Corina Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

Trump, who campaigned actively for the award over the past year and repeatedly called himself the “president of peace,” had told UN delegates in September that his peace record was unmatched, citing conflicts between Israel and Iran, India and Pakistan, and even Thailand and Cambodia. He also claimed he “should have gotten [the prize] four or five times” and that “everyone says” he deserves it.

The outcome marks a personal setback for Trump and a diplomatic disappointment for Pakistan, one of the countries that formally nominated him, portraying him as a “champion of peace.”
