West Indies’ thumping victory over Zimbabwe has tightened the screws on India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 stage, leaving them with little margin for error. On Monday, 23 February.

At the Wankhede Stadium, the Caribbean side delivered a ruthless performance, piling up one of the highest totals in tournament history before sealing a 107-run win. After posting a mammoth 254/6, West Indies bowled Zimbabwe out for 147 in 17.4 overs to register a massive net run rate boost. The result has deepened India’s worries following their 76-run defeat to South Africa in their opening Super 8 clash.

Spin twins dismantle Zimbabwe

Chasing an imposing 255, Zimbabwe showed early intent through Tadiwanashe Marumani, but their innings unraveled rapidly. Akeal Hosein struck twice in quick succession, removing Brian Bennett and Ryan Burl to trigger a collapse. From 20 without loss, Zimbabwe slumped to 20 for 3 within five deliveries.

Gudakesh Motie then took centre stage with a career-best spell of 4/28. Exploiting the turn on offer, Motie outfoxed Dion Myers, bowled Sikandar Raza, and dismissed Tashinga Musekiwa for a golden duck. Tony Munyonga also fell to the left-arm spinner as Zimbabwe’s middle order crumbled under relentless pressure.

Brad Evans offered brief resistance with a counterattacking 43 off 21 balls, but Matthew Forde wrapped up the innings to complete a comprehensive victory.

Hetmyer-Powell blitz powers Windies

Earlier, Zimbabwe had their moments with the new ball. Richard Ngarava dismissed Brandon King, and Brad Evans removed Shai Hope, reducing West Indies to 55 for 2 at the end of the powerplay.

However, Shimron Hetmyer turned the tide dramatically. Given a life early in his innings, he made Zimbabwe pay by smashing the fastest T20 World Cup half-century by a West Indies batter, reaching the landmark in just 19 balls. Hetmyer hammered 85 off 34 deliveries in a breathtaking display of power hitting.

Rovman Powell, initially subdued, shifted gears brilliantly to score 59 off 35 balls. The duo stitched together a 122-run stand off just 52 deliveries for the third wicket, putting Zimbabwe’s bowlers under immense pressure.

In the death overs, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd and Jason Holder provided the finishing flourish as West Indies surged to 254/6 — the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history.

India face uphill battle

The emphatic win has reshaped the Super 8 Group 1 standings. West Indies now sit comfortably at the top with a commanding net run rate of +5.350, while South Africa occupy second place with +3.80. India, reeling from their heavy defeat, find themselves with a damaging net run rate of -3.80.

With two matches remaining, India must now secure dominant victories to keep their semi-final hopes alive. The margin for slip-ups has vanished, and their qualification scenario hinges not just on wins, but on how big those wins are.
