₹500 Crore Audio Clip Sparks BJP-Shiv Sena Face-Off, Shrikant Shinde Comes Under Scrutiny

A controversial audio clip released by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil has triggered a political confrontation between Maharashtra’s ruling allies, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The recording features an unidentified woman allegedly claiming that ₹500 crore was given to Jarange through Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde ahead of the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. However, the authenticity of the recording remains independently unverified.

Jarange Patil has denied receiving or demanding any such payment, while Shrikant Shinde has come under scrutiny over allegations that he acted as an intermediary for the purported transaction. Both the BJP and the Shinde-led Shiv Sena have rejected the allegations and suggested that the controversy may be part of a political conspiracy.

SHIV SENA ALLEGES PLOT AGAINST EK NATH SHINDE
The controversy has exposed tensions between the two allies, with Shiv Sena leaders alleging that certain BJP members are attempting to undermine Eknath Shinde politically.

Shiv Sena leader and former Maharashtra minister Ramdas Kadam accused a section of the BJP of conspiring to damage Shinde’s political standing. On Friday, Kadam named BJP legislative council members Pravin Darekar and Prasad Lad and displayed photographs showing Lad sharing a meal with Jarange Patil.

Kadam alleged that efforts were being made to politically eliminate a prominent Maratha leader through a conspiracy involving members of the BJP.

Darekar and Lad strongly rejected the accusations, warning that the BJP would not accept attempts to implicate its leaders without evidence. They also cautioned Kadam against adopting the confrontational approach associated with Sanjay Raut, a prominent leader of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT).

Lad further claimed that the people allegedly supporting Jarange behind the scenes against Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would eventually be exposed. He warned that the BJP would respond to the allegations.

EK NATH SHINDE DENIES ₹500 CRORE TRANSACTION
Eknath Shinde has categorically denied that he or his son received or transferred the alleged ₹500 crore. Speaking in Delhi, he said neither had he given such an amount nor received it.

The controversy began gaining momentum after Jarange Patil claimed at a rally in Beed earlier this week that there were discussions within BJP circles suggesting that ₹500 crore had been paid to him through Shrikant Shinde.

On Thursday, the activist played the audio recording during a press conference in Jalna. He maintained that the clip was genuine but did not identify all the individuals allegedly heard speaking in it.

Shinde said Jarange should have verified the allegations before making them public and should submit any supporting evidence to the appropriate investigative agencies.

The Shinde-led Shiv Sena has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking attention to the matter.

FADNAVIS ORDERS FORENSIC EXAMINATION OF AUDIO
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a forensic examination of the recording following a meeting with a delegation representing the Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

Fadnavis questioned the timing of the allegations, asking why the conversations had surfaced after approximately two and a half years. His remarks were reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

The forensic examination is expected to help investigators assess the recording’s authenticity and determine whether it has been altered. Until the examination is completed, the allegations contained in the clip remain unverified.

In the recording played by Jarange, an unidentified woman allegedly claims that ₹500 crore was delivered to the activist through Shrikant Shinde. Other voices purportedly discuss strategies to limit Jarange’s influence in the Marathwada region ahead of the 2024 elections.

Jarange has also demanded that Ram Kadam be questioned about how he obtained the recording.

SHRIKANT SHINDE RESPONDS WITH SARCASM
On Saturday, Shrikant Shinde responded to the allegations sarcastically, questioning the suggestion that such a large amount of cash had changed hands.

He joked about trying to imagine what ₹500 crore in cash would look like and how many vehicles would be needed to transport it. His remarks appeared aimed at dismissing the allegation rather than acknowledging any financial transaction.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Prasad Lad later indicated that the dispute had been resolved following discussions involving Shiv Sena minister Uday Samant, Eknath Shinde and Fadnavis.

Lad described the matter as closed and accused Sanjay Raut of attempting to create divisions between the two ruling allies. He also reiterated his respect for Eknath Shinde, according to PTI.

CONTROVERSY ADDS TO REPORTS OF STRAIN WITHIN RULING ALLIANCE
The audio controversy comes amid reports of growing unease between Fadnavis and Shinde. Earlier this month, Shiv Sena minister Gulabrao Patil reportedly described Shinde as a future chief minister during a Dussehra rally, a remark said to have caused discomfort among BJP leaders.

Although both parties remain allies in Maharashtra’s ruling coalition, the latest exchange of accusations has brought their political differences into the spotlight.

The central questions now concern the origin and authenticity of the audio clip, the identities of the people heard in it and whether any evidence supports the alleged ₹500 crore transaction. The outcome of the forensic examination and any subsequent investigation will be crucial in establishing the facts behind the controversy.
