“5-0 Could Be On the Cards”: Michael Vaughan Voices Concern Over England’s Ashes Hopes

Michael Vaughan Fears England Could Be Whitewashed 5-0 in Ashes.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has voiced serious concerns over the state of the national cricket team amid a dismal Ashes campaign. With Ben Stokes’ side already 0-2 down, Vaughan warned that unless England make urgent improvements, they could face a complete 5-0 whitewash against Australia.

England showed glimpses of promise in the first innings of the Day-Night Test at the Gabba but ultimately collapsed. The visitors managed to set Australia a paltry target of 65 runs, which the hosts chased down comfortably in just 10 overs, exposing both technical flaws and mental fragility in high-pressure moments.

Speaking to BBC Cricket, Vaughan said the team currently appears directionless. “I hate to say it. If England are not careful this could be 5-0. I have not seen enough from England to suggest they can win a game yet. They are a good set of players, but if they do not improve quickly, this can get a lot worse before it gets better,” he added.

Criticism of Batting and Selection

Vaughan was particularly critical of England’s batting unit, calling out Ollie Pope for his repeated struggles against Australia. He suggested reconsidering Pope’s position at No. 3 and weighing options like Jacob Bethell or reshuffling the batting order.

“England will have to make changes going into Adelaide. They have to seriously consider Ollie Pope’s position. Bringing in Bethell is a big risk—he has not scored a first-class hundred yet, and he would face Cummins and Lyon. Stokes at three and Jacks at six could be options, but tough decisions need to be made,” Vaughan said.

A Historical Perspective

A 0-5 Ashes whitewash is rare but not unprecedented for England. Only three English teams have suffered this fate: 1920-21, 2006-07, and 2013-14. Australia, in contrast, has never been blanked in an Ashes series.

With the third Test in Adelaide looming, Vaughan believes England must use the long gap between matches to regroup mentally and technically, or risk another historic defeat.
