8 Easy Exercises To Stay Active And Fit This Festive Season

3

The festive season often means packed schedules, family get-togethers, shopping trips, travel and celebrations.

With so much going on, exercise can easily slip down the priority list. However, staying active does not necessarily mean spending hours at the gym. A few simple movements at home or outdoors can help support strength, mobility and overall fitness.

Here are eight easy exercises you can fit into your festive routine without needing complicated equipment.

1. Squats

Squats are a simple way to work the muscles in your legs, hips and lower body. Start with bodyweight squats and focus on controlled movement. As you get comfortable, gradually increase the number of repetitions.

2. Walking

Walking is one of the easiest ways to remain active when your routine gets busy. A brisk 20- to 30-minute walk can support cardiovascular fitness and can easily be fitted around shopping, errands or other daily activities. If you cannot manage one long walk, split it into shorter sessions throughout the day.

3. Lunges

Lunges can help strengthen the legs while also challenging your balance and coordination. Step forward with one leg, lower your body while keeping your upper body upright, and then return to the starting position. Repeat on the other side.

4. Wall Push-Ups

If traditional push-ups feel challenging, wall push-ups are a convenient alternative. Stand facing a wall, place your palms against it and slowly bend your elbows as you bring your upper body towards the wall. Push back to the starting position and repeat.

5. Glute Bridges

Glute bridges target the glutes, hips and lower-body muscles. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet placed firmly on the floor. Slowly raise your hips, pause briefly at the top and then lower them in a controlled manner.

6. Planks

Planks are a simple bodyweight exercise that engages the core. Beginners can start by holding the position for around 15 to 20 seconds and gradually build up their time. Prioritise a stable, comfortable position instead of trying to hold the plank for as long as possible.

7. Calf Raises

Calf raises can easily be incorporated into a busy day and require very little space. Stand upright, rise onto your toes, pause briefly and slowly lower your heels. If you need additional stability, use a wall or sturdy chair for support.

8. Gentle Stretching

Fitness is not just about strength. Adding gentle stretches for the legs, back, shoulders and neck can help maintain flexibility and mobility. Stretching can be particularly useful after long periods of sitting, travelling or working during the festive season.

The key is consistency rather than intensity. Even short bouts of movement throughout a busy festive day can help you stay active and maintain your fitness routine while still enjoying the celebrations.
