Tensions spiked again on Friday evening as Pakistan resumed heavy shelling and unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC), targeting Indian positions in the Digwar and Karmada sectors of Poonch.
The latest escalation comes after an 11-hour lull, marking yet another day of relentless ceasefire violations by Pakistan across Jammu and Kashmir. Sirens blared in several border villages as Pakistani forces opened fire, prompting swift and calibrated retaliation from the Indian Army. Almost simultaneously, Kupwara’s Karnah and Tangdhar sectors came under intense shelling, while fresh firing was also reported in Uri, where ceasefire violations had begun earlier in the day.
In the morning, the Indian Army had confirmed that Pakistan had resumed CFVs in Kupwara and Uri in the early hours of Friday. “A befitting reply was given, and civilian safety was ensured,” the Army stated.
The Army further revealed that on the intervening night of May 8 and 9, Pakistan launched a coordinated drone and missile offensive targeting regions across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Indian air defence systems were swiftly activated, blackouts were enforced in vulnerable zones, and the incoming threats were effectively repulsed.
“The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and a befitting reply was given to the ceasefire violations,” the Army said. “Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation. All nefarious designs will be responded with force.”
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, speaking at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) briefing on Friday, said Pakistan had violated Indian airspace multiple times along the western border with the intent to target military infrastructure. “On the night of May 7 and 8, the Pakistani army violated Indian airspace several times over the entire western border with the intention of targeting military infrastructure. Not only this, the Pakistani army also fired heavy calibre weapons along the Line of Control,” she said.
The situation along the LoC remains tense but under control, with the Indian Army maintaining high operational readiness.
Earlier on Thursday, India said it foiled Pakistan military’s attempts to target military installations in 15 cities in the northern and western parts of the country using missiles and drones as tensions between the two neighbours mounted amid fears of a wider conflict.
On Wednesday night, the Pakistani military attempted to target Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj.
India launched “precision strikes” under Operation Sindoor on nine terror targets in Pakistan and PoK following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. The strikes killed at least 10 family members of JeM chief Masood Azhar and four close aides.
