Delhi Under Heatwave Grip as IMD Predicts 45°C; Health Ministry Issues Public Advisory.
With temperatures in Delhi expected to hit a scorching 45°C, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, warning of an intense and prolonged heatwave across northwestern India. Night temperatures are also forecast to stay unusually high, hovering around 29°C.
In response, the Union Health Ministry has issued a public health advisory, urging people to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours and to stay adequately hydrated with safe, clean fluids.
“Extreme heat can be life-threatening,” the ministry warned in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Stay indoors during the hottest hours of the day, consume light meals, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. Never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.”
Citizens have been advised to seek immediate medical attention if they or others show symptoms of heatstroke—such as an extremely high body temperature, dizziness, confusion, or unconsciousness. Emergency services can be contacted by dialing 108 or 102.
Health authorities also recommend wearing loose cotton clothes, using ORS or homemade electrolyte solutions, and checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbours during this extreme weather event.
