Tharoor’s Veiled Message Sparks Buzz: “Wings Don’t Need Permission to Fly” Amid Congress Tensions.
Just hours after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge appeared to rebuke Shashi Tharoor for his recent praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Thiruvananthapuram MP posted a cryptic quote on social media, reigniting speculation about internal discord within the party.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Tharoor shared a popular motivational quote: “Don’t ask permission to fly. The wings are yours, and the sky belongs to no one.” The post, widely interpreted as a subtle retort to the party’s criticism, suggests a call for personal agency and independence—a veiled message to his detractors within the Congress.
Earlier in the day, Kharge criticized Tharoor during a public appearance, remarking:
“Shashi Tharoor’s language is very good. That’s why he is in the Congress Working Committee. But while we said ‘country first’ during Operation Sindoor, some people seem to say ‘Modi first, country later’. What should we do in such a case?”
The comments were a direct reference to Tharoor’s recent remarks during an international delegation trip for Operation Sindoor, where he described Prime Minister Modi as a “prime asset for India” on the global stage. His comments drew backlash from party colleagues, especially after he downplayed the UPA-era surgical strikes and applauded the Modi government’s handling of external affairs.
Responding to the controversy, Tharoor defended his position, calling out “critics and trolls” for twisting his statements. He clarified that his intent was to present a unified front in the interest of the nation, not to signal any political shift. “I have better things to do,” he said, dismissing the online furore.
Tharoor, who led one of the seven cross-party delegations under Operation Sindoor, met Prime Minister Modi on June 11 after the outreach concluded. He has since admitted to differences with some in the party but insisted there is no rift with the leadership or grassroots workers.
As speculation continues, Tharoor’s cryptic message adds to the intrigue surrounding his role in a party facing mounting challenges, both internally and on the national stage.
