BJP Alleges Preferential Admission for Accused in Kolkata Law College Rape Case.

A new controversy has emerged in the South Calcutta Law College rape case after BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya questioned the legitimacy of one of the accused’s admission into the college.

In a post on social media platform X on Monday, Malviya alleged that Zaib Ahmed, one of the three arrested in connection with the case, was admitted to South Calcutta Law College—affiliated with the University of Calcutta—despite securing a low rank of 2634 in the Calcutta University Law Entrance Test (CULET-UG 2024).

Malviya wrote, “Who gave Zaib Ahmed a seat in this prestigious law college? Who is protecting him? We demand answers. And we demand them NOW.” He further claimed that more deserving candidates had been denied admission while Ahmed secured a spot.

Ahmed, along with Manojit Mishra and Pramit Mukherjee, has been arrested on charges of rape and criminal conspiracy. The trio is accused of sexually assaulting a 24-year-old fellow law student inside the campus on June 25. According to the police, Mishra—allegedly enraged after his marriage proposal was rejected—forced the woman into a security guard’s room and raped her, while Ahmed and Mukherjee allegedly filmed the crime. The guard was reportedly instructed to remain outside during the incident.

The assault has triggered widespread outrage across Kolkata, with student groups and civil society staging protests. Many have drawn comparisons to the 2024 RG Kar Medical College case, where a postgraduate student was raped and murdered on campus.

As the investigation unfolds, questions around the admission process and alleged political shielding have added new layers to an already explosive case, placing pressure on the university administration and law enforcement to act transparently.
