US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced a sweeping new round of tariffs, including a 35% duty on Canadian imports set to take effect August 1, escalating his administration’s aggressive trade agenda.
In a letter shared on his social media platform, Trump informed Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that the tariff could rise further if Canada responded with retaliatory measures.
The move marks a significant escalation in Trump’s widening trade offensive. In recent days, the administration has imposed new tariffs on several countries—including key allies Japan and South Korea—and slapped a 50% tariff on copper imports.
Speaking to NBC News, Trump said more countries should expect similar action soon. “Those that haven’t received letters yet will,” he said, adding that blanket tariffs of 15% to 20% on most remaining trade partners were under consideration.
