Tesla Launches First India Showroom in Mumbai, Reveals Model Y Pricing

EV pioneer kicks off retail operations; prices start at ₹60 lakh for imported SUV Tesla has officially entered the Indian market, opening its first retail showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on Tuesday. The flagship space marks a major milestone for Elon Musk’s company as it seeks to tap into one of the fastest-growing electric vehicle markets in the world.

India Debut with Model Y
Tesla will begin its India journey with the Model Y SUV, which will be imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) from its Gigafactory in Shanghai. The initial stock includes six units brought in for display and test drives.

The pricing, as listed on Tesla’s India website, is as follows:

Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive: ₹60 lakh (approx. $69,765)

Model Y Long-Range: ₹68 lakh

These prices are significantly higher than in other global markets. For comparison:

U.S.: Starts at $44,990

China: ¥263,500 (approx. ₹30 lakh)

Germany: €45,970 (approx. ₹45 lakh)

The price difference is largely due to India’s steep import duties on CBUs.

Infrastructure & Service Plans
In addition to the vehicle imports, Tesla has brought in Supercharger equipment and accessories worth nearly $1 million from China and the U.S. These fast-charging stations are expected to be installed in key locations around Mumbai to support early adopters.

Tesla is also setting up a dedicated service center in Kurla West, Mumbai, to handle after-sales operations. The company already has a registered office in Bengaluru and an engineering hub in Pune, laying the groundwork for broader operations across India.

Teaser Campaign Builds Buzz
Ahead of the showroom opening, Tesla teased its India launch on social media. A post on its India-specific X (formerly Twitter) handle featured the message “Coming soon” alongside a graphic hinting at the company’s debut in July 2025.

Looking Ahead
While the Mumbai showroom marks Tesla’s retail entry, future expansion will likely depend on how the Indian market responds to the premium pricing and limited availability. More showrooms and service centers may follow in other metro cities as Tesla gauges customer demand.
