Son Heung-Min to Leave Tottenham After Nine Years: “I Need a New Environment”

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-Min has officially announced he will be leaving the club this summer, bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year spell in North London. Speaking ahead of Spurs’ pre-season clash with Newcastle United in his native Korea, the 33-year-old confirmed his decision to part ways with the club, calling it the most difficult of his career.

“I just want to share that I’ve decided to leave this club this summer,” said Son at a press conference. “Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision.” Son, who joined Spurs in 2015, has been a fan favourite and one of the club’s most consistent performers. Last season, he lifted the Europa League trophy with the team and has been linked with a potential move to MLS side Los Angeles FC.

Explaining his decision, Son said: “I’ve achieved everything I can at Tottenham. I need a new environment for a fresh challenge.” Reflecting on his journey, he added emotionally, “I came to North London as a kid — a boy who couldn’t speak English. I leave this club as a man. Thanks to all the Spurs fans who have given me so much love.”

Son revealed he has already spoken with a few close teammates, including Ben Davies, about his departure. “They were disappointed but also happy for me. We spend more time together than with our families. It wasn’t easy to tell them.”

The upcoming friendly against Newcastle on August 3 could mark Son’s final appearance in a Spurs shirt. During his time at the club, Son scored 160 goals, becoming the fifth-highest goalscorer in Spurs history. He also won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season.
