Mondo Duplantis Breaks Pole Vault World Record for 13th Time with 6.29m Leap in Budapest.
Sweden’s pole vault superstar Armand “Mondo” Duplantis soared to his 13th world record on Tuesday, clearing 6.29m at the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest. The double Olympic champion improved his own mark by one centimetre, surpassing the 6.28m he set in Stockholm in June.
Pushed by Greek rival Emmanouil Karalis, both athletes cleared 6.02m on their first attempts. Karalis exited after failing twice at 6.11m, while Duplantis needed a second try to get over that height. With victory secured, the Swede raised the bar to 6.29m — missing once, then rattling it on his second attempt before watching it miraculously stay in place, triggering wild celebrations with his partner, Desire Inglander, and family.
The win came despite a shaky start, with Duplantis missing his first attempt at 5.62m before settling into rhythm. He went over 5.82m on his first try before progressing to the decisive heights. Australia’s Kurtis Marschall took third with 5.82m.
Duplantis, who first broke the world record in 2020, has since redefined the event. His next stop is Saturday’s Silesia Diamond League — the same meet where he set a record last year.
Elsewhere in Budapest, the Netherlands’ Femke Bol cruised to victory in the women’s 400m hurdles with 52.24 seconds, more than two seconds ahead of Belgium’s Naomi Van Den Broeck. In the women’s 100m, Cote d’Ivoire’s Marie-Josée Ta Lou Smith won in 10.97 seconds, edging Jamaica’s Tina Clayton (10.99) and Shericka Jackson (11.00). Sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce finished fourth in 11.07 in what she says is her final competitive season.
