India Appoints New High Commissioner to Canada After Nine-Month Gap.

India has appointed a new High Commissioner to Canada after a nine-month vacancy, a move seen as a signal of cautious improvement in ties between the two countries.

The envoy’s posting comes after months of strained relations, following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations in 2023 of Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar — claims New Delhi strongly denied. The row led to the expulsion of diplomats on both sides and a freeze in high-level engagement.

The absence of an Indian representative in Ottawa since then had underscored the depth of the diplomatic rift. Officials say the new appointment will restore a crucial communication channel and help address pressing bilateral issues, including trade, education, and the welfare of the Indian diaspora.

While the move indicates a willingness to stabilize relations, observers note that key differences remain, particularly over Canada’s handling of pro-Khalistani groups.

Still, the arrival of a new envoy is being viewed as a step towards easing tensions and reopening dialogue between New Delhi and Ottawa.
