Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand ended India’s 14-year wait for a women’s doubles medal.

At the BWF World Championships, producing a stunning comeback to defeat China’s fourth-seeded pair Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian 16-21, 21-15, 21-13 in a thrilling quarter-final on Friday, August 21.

The victory secured India a women’s doubles medal at the World Championships for the first time since Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta won bronze in 2011. Jolly and Gopichand also reached the semi-finals after overturning a 0-3 head-to-head record against the Chinese duo.

The Indian pair had been in impressive form throughout the tournament, winning their first three matches in straight games. However, the quarter-final presented a much tougher challenge against the fourth seeds, who had beaten them in all three previous meetings.

China Take Control Early

Jia and Zhang made a blistering start, racing to a 4-0 lead as the Indian pair struggled to settle. A 57-shot rally further highlighted the intensity of the contest, with the Chinese combination maintaining control through the early exchanges.

India gradually found its rhythm. Gayatri began unleashing powerful smashes, while Treesa grew increasingly effective around the net. The Indians produced a six-point run to close the gap to 8-9, but China held firm and took an 11-8 lead into the interval.

Despite India’s improved play, the early deficit proved decisive. Jia and Zhang eventually wrapped up the opening game 21-16.

Treesa-Gayatri Fight Back

The second game saw a determined response from the Indians. Treesa immediately took the initiative, while Gayatri continued to put pressure on the Chinese defence with her attacking play.

The game remained closely contested, with long rallies repeatedly testing both pairs. India eventually moved ahead for the first time before the interval and began to dictate more of the exchanges.

The intensity increased as the game progressed. A 43-shot rally at 15-14 went India’s way, giving the pair a crucial advantage. They maintained their composure in the closing stages and won 21-15 to force a deciding game.

India Hold Their Nerve

The decider began with both pairs trading points, but the Indians looked increasingly confident. The home crowd added to the atmosphere, roaring after every successful exchange as Jolly and Gopichand continued to apply pressure.

Unlike the opening game, India refused to allow China to establish a significant advantage. The pair stayed composed during the crucial rallies and repeatedly forced errors from their opponents.

Jia and Zhang were unable to regain control as the Indian duo pulled away in the closing stages. Jolly and Gopichand sealed the decider 21-13 to complete a memorable comeback.

The victory was significant on several fronts. The Indians not only secured a World Championships medal for the country’s women’s doubles category after 14 years but also ended their losing streak against the formidable Chinese pair.

India has now continued its run of winning at least one medal at every edition of the BWF World Championships since 2011. For Jolly and Gopichand, however, the focus will now shift to the semi-finals, with a historic medal already secured and a chance to go one step further.
