UN Chief Guterres Calls China’s Support for Multilateralism ‘Vital’
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday emphasized the importance of China’s role in upholding multilateralism during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of a security forum in Tianjin.
Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to the UN, describing the country as a “reliable partner” that will continue to provide “stability and certainty” in international affairs.
Guterres, attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders from Central, South, and Southeast Asia as well as the Middle East, said:
“In this moment in which multilateralism is under fire, the support of China is an extremely important element to preserve.”
He added that global policy is increasingly complex, with some efforts appearing more performative than substantive, and praised China as “a fundamental pillar of the multilateral system” for which the UN is “extremely appreciative and grateful.”
Xi responded by underscoring China’s ongoing commitment to global cooperation:
“China is willing to deepen cooperation with the United Nations, supports its central role in international affairs, and will jointly shoulder responsibilities in maintaining world peace and promoting development and prosperity.”
The comments highlight China’s growing influence within multilateral forums and its role in shaping the Global South’s agenda at platforms like the SCO.
