Mitchell Starc Retires from T20Is to Focus on Tests and 2027 ODI World Cup.

Mitchell Starc has confirmed his retirement from Twenty20 internationals, choosing to prioritise Australia’s heavy Test schedule and his long-term goal of playing the 2027 men’s ODI World Cup. The 35-year-old pacer, who last featured in T20Is during the 2024 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, made the call just six months ahead of the next edition in India and Sri Lanka.

Starc ends his T20I career as Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker, behind Adam Zampa. Across 65 matches since his debut in 2012 against Pakistan, he claimed 79 wickets at an economy rate of 7.74. He appeared in five of the six T20 World Cups, missing only the 2016 edition through injury, and was a key part of the side that lifted the trophy in Dubai in 2021.

“Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority,” Starc said. “I have loved every T20 game for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup — not just because we won but because of the incredible group and the fun we had along the way. Looking ahead to the Indian Test tour, the Ashes and the 2027 ODI World Cup, stepping away from T20Is gives me the best chance to stay fresh and at my best for those campaigns.”

Australia face a punishing schedule from 2026 onwards: hosting Bangladesh, touring South Africa and New Zealand, before a five-Test series in India in early 2027. That will be followed by the 150th anniversary Test against England at the MCG, an away Ashes series in the UK, and the ODI World Cup in southern Africa later that year.

Chair of selectors George Bailey paid tribute to Starc’s contribution in the shortest format. “Mitch should be incredibly proud of his T20 career. He was central to the 2021 World Cup win and, as always, had a knack for breaking games open with his wicket-taking ability. While his T20 journey has ended, we’re delighted he remains committed to Tests and ODIs for as long as possible.”

Starc’s announcement coincided with the squad naming for Australia’s three-match T20I series against New Zealand in October. Cameron Green has been rested to play Sheffield Shield cricket, while Nathan Ellis has withdrawn for family reasons. Matt Short returns from injury, Mitchell Owen has recovered from concussion, and Marcus Stoinis is back in contention after resolving availability issues.
