Belgium to Recognize Palestinian State at UN Amid Gaza Crisis.

Belgium announced it will recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. The decision was confirmed by Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot on Tuesday.

“Palestine will be recognized by Belgium at the UN session, and firm measures are being taken against the Israeli government,” Prevot said on X.

Earlier, in July, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that France would also recognize Palestine during the UN assembly, scheduled from September 9 to 23 in New York. Since then, more than a dozen Western nations have urged others to follow suit.

Prevot said Belgium’s decision was motivated by the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israeli offensives have displaced much of the population and the UN has declared a famine.

“In response to the violence perpetrated by Israel in violation of international law, and in light of our obligations—including the duty to prevent genocide—Belgium had to take strong measures to pressure both the Israeli government and Hamas,” he explained.

He emphasized, “This is not about punishing the Israeli people, but ensuring that their government respects international and humanitarian law and taking action to try to improve the situation on the ground.”
