Aamir Khan slams Bollywood stars for extravagant on-set demands, calls it ‘shameful’
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has criticised the growing culture of lavish on-set demands, calling it “shameful” and unfair to producers. In a chat with Komal Nahta on his YouTube channel Game Changers, Khan spoke about actors requesting multiple vanity vans, live kitchens, gyms, and other perks at the producer’s expense.
Recalling his early days in the industry, Khan said, “Stars should get recognition, but not to a point where they start to trouble the producers. There was a system where the producer would pay for a star’s driver and help on set. I found this strange. If the producer is paying my personal staff, does that mean he will also pay for my kids’ school fees? Where will this stop?”
He stressed that producers should only cover costs directly linked to filmmaking, such as makeup, hair, and costumes. “Paying for my personal driver or help is my responsibility, especially when I am earning well,” he said.
Khan noted that the problem has worsened in recent years. “I hear stars today expect producers to pay for their trainers, cooks, even live kitchens, and multiple vanity vans. While I’m not against luxuries, passing these costs to producers is damaging the industry.”
Highlighting exceptions for film-related training, he cited Dangal, where producers covered wrestling coaching. “But outside such needs, personal costs should never burden a film,” he added.
On his own practice, Khan said, “Even today, when I take my family for an outdoor shoot, I always pay from my pocket. Stars today are taking advantage of their status. Their demands only project them in the wrong light.”
