Bavuma: Beating India Would Rank Just Below Our WTC Final Win

Bavuma Eyes Historic Feat as South Africa Chase First Test Series Win in India Since 2000.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has set his sights on ending one of Test cricket’s longest droughts — a series win in India. The Proteas last won a Test on Indian soil in 2010, and haven’t claimed a series victory there since 2000. Ahead of the two-match series starting Friday, November 14, at Eden Gardens, Bavuma said conquering India would rank just below winning the World Test Championship (WTC) earlier this year.

“Obviously, winning the World Test Championship — not much can top that,” Bavuma said. “But second to that would be winning in India. It’s something we haven’t managed for a long time, so it’s definitely high on our list of ambitions.”

Unbeaten Run Under Bavuma

Since taking charge, Bavuma has led South Africa to an impressive run of nine wins in ten Tests, with one match drawn due to rain. The team has shown remarkable consistency under coach Shukri Conrad, remaining unbeaten in full-strength Test series since 2023.

“We understand the magnitude of the challenge,” Bavuma admitted. “Some of us have felt the hurt before, so we know what it takes. Both teams have quality players — India have fantastic talent, even with some inexperience — and it’s the same with us. The guys are eager to test themselves against the best.”

Learning from Williamson

In a lighter moment, Bavuma revealed a playful conversation he had with New Zealand great Kane Williamson, whose side famously whitewashed India 3-0 at home last year.

“I met Kane at an awards evening in Mumbai a couple of months ago,” Bavuma shared with a laugh. “I asked him for tips on how to win in India. He wasn’t too forthcoming — he just said, ‘Make sure you win the toss.’ So, I’ve been practising that!”

Aiming to Break the India Jinx

South Africa’s record in India makes the challenge clear — seven straight losses across three tours. Their last series success came a quarter century ago under Hansie Cronje. Since then, they’ve drawn two series and lost three.

Now, with renewed belief, a stable leadership group, and a hunger to make history, Bavuma’s men will look to script a new chapter when they step onto Indian soil this week.
