Rahul Gandhi Alleges ‘Unfair’ Bihar Polls After Mahagathbandhan’s Crushing Defeat.

Hours after the Mahagathbandhan suffered a sweeping defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections on Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi thanked voters who supported the alliance but claimed the contest was compromised from the start. In a post on X, he said the opposition would intensify its fight to “protect the Constitution and democracy.”

“I express my heartfelt gratitude to the millions of voters in Bihar who trusted the Mahagathbandhan. This result is truly surprising. We could not achieve victory in an election that was not fair from the very beginning,” he wrote.

Calling the Bihar verdict a setback that requires introspection, Gandhi said the Congress and the INDIA bloc would “deeply review” the results and strengthen their efforts going forward.

The NDA, led by the BJP and JDU, is set for a historic win, while Congress recorded one of its worst performances in the state since 2010. The NDA secured 202 seats, whereas the Mahagathbandhan managed just 35.

Congress Leaders Criticise Poll Outcome

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera alleged that early trends showed a direct confrontation “between Gyanesh Kumar and the people of India,” not just political parties. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said Congress respects the mandate but will continue its fight against forces “misusing constitutional institutions to weaken democracy,” urging workers not to be demoralised.

Other leaders voiced sharp criticism:

Shashi Tharoor: Called the results “seriously disappointing” and demanded a thorough review of tactical, messaging, and organisational failures.

Jairam Ramesh: Alleged large-scale manipulation, blaming the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Election Commission, and vowed to intensify the campaign to “save democracy.”

Priyank Kharge: Termed the outcome “extremely surprising” and “unacceptable,” insisting “this is not the people’s mandate.”

Mumtaz Patel: Criticised concentrated decision-making in a few hands, highlighting internal organisational failures and suggesting stronger collective action if elections are compromised.

Shakeel Ahmad: Pointed to ticket distribution irregularities and noted AIMIM’s unexpected gains in Seemanchal.

The Bihar Assembly now sees the BJP-led NDA with a commanding three-fourth majority in the 243-member house, while the INDIA bloc faces a major setback. RJD won 23 seats, leading in two more, and Congress finished with six.
