Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Death: A Look at Global Leaders Who Faced Similar Fate.
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death by the country’s International Crimes Tribunal for “crimes against humanity” linked to last year’s student-led protests that toppled her Awami League government.
According to the United Nations, government crackdowns during Hasina’s tenure led to the deaths of up to 1,400 people. The verdict was delivered in absentia on Monday, as Hasina remains in exile. Political unrest continues in Bangladesh ahead of elections scheduled for February 2026.
