South Korean Leader Marks Martial Law Anniversary, Says Nation Overcame ‘Unprecedented Crisis’

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said Wednesday that the country had successfully overcome an “unprecedented crisis” in democracy, one year after ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law, sparking political turmoil.

On December 3, 2024, Yoon suspended civilian rule—the first such move in over four decades—prompting massive protests and a showdown in parliament. A year later, South Korea remains politically polarized, facing a slowing economy, an aging population, and ongoing security concerns from North Korea.

Lee, who succeeded Yoon, said the people “overcame an unprecedented crisis of democracy in world history through peaceful means.” While touting the strength of “K-democracy” in removing Yoon, he acknowledged that national unity remains a priority.

Lee is set to attend a rally near the National Assembly, where lawmakers a year ago defied soldiers to reject the martial law bid. Seoul police expect at least 2,000 participants, marking the first such gathering near the legislature since the events of last year.

Supporters of Yoon’s former People Power Party (PPP) plan a separate rally, demanding that leaders hold firm and not apologize for the martial law crisis, which has divided party members. PPP floor leader Song Eon-seog apologized for failing to prevent the declaration, while party chief Jang Dong-hyuk claimed the move was meant to “counter an act of parliamentary tyranny.”

Yoon remains in prison facing trial for insurrection and related offenses linked to the martial law declaration. He could face the death penalty if convicted. His wife is also in custody, facing bribery, stock-market manipulation, and luxury gift charges exceeding $50,000. This marks the first time in South Korea’s history that a former president and first lady are both imprisoned.

Two dozen of Yoon’s allies, including his former intelligence chief and interior minister, are also on trial for insurrection. All hearings related to the martial law declaration are scheduled to conclude by February.
