Sandesh Jhingan Urges Focus on Domestic Football After Messi’s India Tour
Lionel Messi’s highly anticipated tour of India concluded after stops in four cities, drawing millions of fans eager to catch a glimpse of the football icon. While the event celebrated the sport, it also highlighted the stark contrast between India’s domestic football ecosystem and the global stage.
Following the tour, Indian national team defender Sandesh Jhingan used his Instagram to call attention to the state of domestic football. He expressed concern over the lack of investment in Indian football despite the massive funds spent on Messi’s visit.
“It genuinely made me happy to see that our country loves football, can fill stadiums, and that people are willing to spend lakhs to witness the sport,” Jhingan said. “What troubles me is that at a time when our football ecosystem faces one of its most challenging phases, we stand on the brink of having no active domestic football ahead of us.”
Highlighting the disparity, he added: “It feels as though we are close to shutting everything down because there is no willingness to invest in football within India, yet crores were spent on this tour. What this tells me is that we do love the sport, but perhaps not enough to support our own players.”
Jhingan also addressed potential criticism regarding India’s poor international performances. “I accept responsibility for performances. But football does not exist in isolation. Structure, stability, and belief profoundly influence what happens on the pitch,” he noted.
He concluded with a hopeful message: “Millions experienced a once-in-a-lifetime moment with Messi. I only hope this sparks a deeper conversation about not just loving football, but sustaining it at home.”
