US Strikes Venezuela: Maduro Captured, Delcy Rodríguez Named Acting President.
The United States struck Venezuela on Saturday, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. Footage from a US drug agency office in the US shows Maduro handcuffed, briefly addressing the camera to wish viewers a “Happy New Year.”
Following the capture, the Venezuelan Supreme Court ordered Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to assume the powers and duties of acting president, citing Maduro’s “material and temporary impossibility to exercise his functions.” Rodríguez now takes charge on an interim basis.
The attack sparked international reactions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hinted at potential future US action against dictators, referencing Maduro’s capture. Meanwhile, Congress MP Karti P. Chidambaram asked India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to clarify India’s official stance on the unfolding situation.
The US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that Caribbean airspace restrictions imposed during the operation have been lifted, allowing flights to resume.
A small group of pro-Maduro protesters gathered outside the White House, condemning the US action. The US Embassy in Venezuela issued a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory, warning citizens of ongoing risks and advising those in the country to stay alert, maintain communication, and avoid travel. No commercial flights are currently operating in or out of Venezuela.
