The Karnataka government on Tuesday suspended DGP-rank senior police officer Ramachandra Rao after a video allegedly showing his intimate moments with multiple women inside his office surfaced on social media.
The move followed mounting controversy and public outrage over the senior officer’s alleged conduct while in public office. The matter reached Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who sought a detailed briefing from the concerned department on Monday. After reviewing the developments, the state administration ordered Rao’s suspension a day later.
According to sources, the Chief Minister was furious after watching the footage and demanded an explanation for how such an incident could have occurred within the police establishment. The episode also triggered political pressure on the ruling Congress government, with opposition parties closely watching whether a formal inquiry and disciplinary action would be initiated.
The video, which has since gone viral, purportedly shows Rao hugging and kissing different women while in uniform during office hours. Sources said the visuals appear to have been secretly recorded inside the DGP’s office and show women visiting on different occasions, dressed differently, while Rao allegedly interacted with them intimately as official work was underway.
Rao, however, has strongly denied the allegations, claiming the video is “fabricated and false.”
“This is a morphed video. People are targeting me,” Rao said, adding that he was posted in Belagavi eight years ago. “We have spoken to our advocate and will take appropriate action. This is shocking for us. The video is completely false. Nothing can be established without a proper investigation. An inquiry must be conducted into how such false information is being spread,” he told India Today.
Amid the controversy, Rao also met the state Home Minister to discuss the matter. However, the meeting failed to prevent his suspension.
