Sophie Molineux named Australia’s all-format captain, succeeding Alyssa Healy.
Australia have confirmed Sophie Molineux as the long-term successor to Alyssa Healy across all three formats, marking a major leadership transition in the women’s setup. The left-arm spinner will officially begin her captaincy during the T20I leg of the upcoming home series against India, with Healy set to retire from international cricket later this summer.
Stepping into big shoes
Speaking after her appointment, Molineux said:
“It’s a real honour to be named Australian captain and something I’m incredibly proud of, especially following on from Alyssa, who’s had such a huge impact on this team and the game. I’m incredibly grateful for the trust shown in me and excited to grow alongside this group of players.”
Molineux replaces Healy as full-time captain while Tahlia McGrath retains her role as vice-captain and Ashleigh Gardner joins as second vice-captain, strengthening Australia’s leadership core ahead of a packed international calendar and the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Why not McGrath?
Despite her strong record as stand-in captain, McGrath was overlooked for the top role. Selectors cited a combination of recent form and leadership balance—she struggled in the ODI World Cup and had a modest WBBL campaign, which may have influenced the decision despite her proven captaincy credentials.
A calculated risk
Molineux, 28, has battled recurring injuries and has not played T20I or Test cricket since 2024. She was carefully managed during the ODI World Cup and did not complete a full WBBL season. However, her domestic success—leading the Melbourne Renegades to the 2024–25 WBBL title—reinforced her leadership credentials.
National selector Shawn Flegler said her workload will be closely monitored:
“We will prioritise key tournaments and major international series following injury challenges in recent seasons. Tahlia McGrath remains vice-captain, recognising her significant leadership contribution, and Ashleigh Gardner joins her to strengthen the leadership group.”
Timeline of captaincy
Molineux will lead Australia in the three T20Is against India before Healy returns to captain the ODI and Test legs of her farewell series. She will then assume full-time leadership across formats during the Caribbean tour and ahead of the T20 World Cup in England, completing a remarkable comeback and leadership journey.
