SpaceX Acquires xAI in Record $250 Billion Deal, Musk Unites AI and Space Ambitions

Elon Musk announced on Monday that SpaceX has acquired his AI startup xAI in a record-setting transaction, merging the Grok chatbot maker with his rocket-and-satellite company. The deal, valued at $250 billion for xAI and $1 trillion for SpaceX, creates one of the most ambitious tech tie-ups in recent history, combining space, defense, and AI under a single corporate umbrella.

Musk described the acquisition as “not just the next chapter, but the next book” in SpaceX and xAI’s mission, aiming to “extend the light of consciousness to the stars.” The purchase surpasses the $203 billion Vodafone–Mannesmann merger in 2000 as the world’s largest M&A deal. Shares of the combined company are expected to price at around $527 each.

The deal strengthens SpaceX’s ambitions in data centers and AI, positioning it against rivals like Google, Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI. It also consolidates Musk’s sprawling business ecosystem—Tesla, Neuralink, the Boring Company, and xAI—into a tighter network, often informally called the “Muskonomy.”

Musk has a history of integrating his companies. Last year, he merged social media platform X into xAI, granting the AI startup access to its data and users. In 2016, he used Tesla stock to acquire SolarCity.

Regulators and investors may scrutinize the merger for governance, valuation, and conflicts of interest, given Musk’s overlapping leadership roles. The deal also involves potential national security reviews, as SpaceX holds substantial contracts with NASA, the Department of Defense, and intelligence agencies.
