In a significant turn in the threat case involving Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, the Mumbai Crime Branch is probing a possible link to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

Investigators suspect that an alleged gang member known as Harry Boxer may be connected to the extortion attempt. According to police sources, a WhatsApp voice note demanding ₹1 crore was sent to Singh’s manager. The sender allegedly threatened the actor and sought money. During preliminary verification, officers found that the voice in the audio clip resembles that of Harry Boxer. However, officials clarified that forensic and technical examinations are underway to conclusively establish the sender’s identity.

Investigators believe the message may have originated from outside India and could have been routed through a VPN to conceal its location. The Mumbai Police have sought assistance from Interpol to trace the source and digital trail of the communication.

The development comes amid a wider crackdown by the Crime Branch on suspected gang-linked activities in Mumbai. In a related case, five individuals — Aman Marote (27), Aditya Gayaki (19), Siddharth Yenpure (20), Samarth Pomaji (18) and Swapnil Sakat (23) — have been arrested in connection with a firing incident outside filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s residence. Another alleged member of the Bishnoi gang, Shubham Lonkar, has been named as a wanted accused.

Police said the shooter used a high-quality country-made firearm and discharged five rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition. Forensic teams are examining whether the cartridges were 7.62×39 mm or 7.62×51 mm. Investigators suspect the shooter may not have acted alone and are probing the possible involvement of additional gang members. Financial transactions, bank accounts and witness statements are also under scrutiny.

Separately, actor Aayush Sharma, brother-in-law of Salman Khan, has reportedly received a threat email dated February 11. That matter is also being investigated by the Mumbai Crime Branch.
