So near, yet so far for Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite winning the toss, they failed to capitalize and slumped to another defeat, remaining winless after six matches this season.
Gujarat Titans, meanwhile, continued their resurgence, riding on Shubman Gill’s composed 86 to secure a hard-fought five-wicket victory.
KKR needed Cameron Green to anchor their innings, and he delivered with a well-made 79. However, the lack of substantial support from the other end proved costly. Regular wickets stalled momentum, and while their total of 180 looked competitive, it never felt fully secure.
In reply, Gujarat Titans were given early momentum by Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. Gill looked in complete control from the outset, finding gaps with ease and playing fluent strokes through the off side. Sudharsan complemented him well, ensuring GT raced to 40 without loss in the first three overs.
Sunil Narine provided KKR their breakthrough, dismissing Sudharsan with extra bounce, but Gujarat remained firmly ahead. Jos Buttler carried forward the momentum, striking confidently before falling to Varun Chakravarthy, briefly giving KKR hope.
Gill, however, remained the constant. Mixing fluency with smart strike rotation, he kept Gujarat comfortably ahead of the required rate. His half-century came off just 27 balls, setting the platform for the chase.
KKR did manage to claw back slightly through Chakravarthy, but Gill’s dismissal for 86—caught brilliantly by Cameron Green at deep third—was too late to shift the balance significantly. By then, Gujarat were firmly in control.
Despite a brief nervy phase after Gill’s exit, Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan ensured there were no further hiccups, guiding GT home in the final over for their third consecutive win.
Earlier, KKR’s innings revolved around Cameron Green, who held things together after early blows. Mohammed Siraj removed Ajinkya Rahane for a golden duck, while Kagiso Rabada accounted for Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Tim Seifert as KKR stumbled early.
Green steadied the innings with mature stroke play, building partnerships with Rovman Powell and Anukul Roy to revive the innings. He also handled Rashid Khan effectively and survived a couple of close calls, including a dropped chance on 62.
However, KKR’s collapse in the death overs proved decisive. Losing five wickets in 22 balls, they failed to accelerate at the finish despite reaching a position to push beyond 190.
Green’s dismissal in the final over for 79 summed up KKR’s innings—promising but incomplete. Their total of 180 ultimately proved insufficient on a surface where Gujarat Titans timed their chase to perfection.
