Virat Kohli electrifies Dharamsala, fans hail him as India’s greatest athlete

Virat Kohli once again proved why he remains one of cricket’s fittest athletes, turning into a livewire on the field during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s clash against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on Sunday, May 17.

The 37-year-old’s relentless energy in the outfield quickly became a talking point on social media, with fans marvelling at the intensity and commitment he displayed throughout the contest. Videos of Kohli sprinting across the ground, charging after the ball and celebrating with trademark aggression went viral online, triggering widespread praise from cricket followers.

Many fans highlighted how Kohli continued to match — and often surpass — the athleticism of players far younger than him. Several social media users described his fitness levels as “unreal”, while others called him India’s greatest athlete for maintaining elite standards deep into his career.

Kohli delivers with bat and in the field

Kohli’s electric fielding effort came after another crucial contribution with the bat. Opening the innings on a batting-friendly surface, the former RCB captain scored a fluent 58 off 37 deliveries and stitched together a key 76-run stand with Devdutt Padikkal, who made 45.

In the process, Kohli crossed the 500-run mark for the season, extending his own record for the most IPL seasons with 500 or more runs. It marked the ninth time he achieved the milestone in a single edition of the tournament.

Powered by Kohli’s knock and a blistering unbeaten 73 off 40 balls from Venkatesh Iyer, RCB posted a commanding total of 222 for four.

RCB become first team to qualify

In reply, Punjab Kings struggled to keep pace as RCB’s bowling attack delivered a disciplined performance. Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck in the opening over to remove Priyansh Arya and put PBKS under early pressure.

Although Shashank Singh counterattacked with a rapid 56 off 27 balls, RCB maintained control through sharp fielding and disciplined bowling.

Kohli also made an impact in the field with a clean catch at long-off to dismiss Suryansh Shedge at a crucial stage of the chase.

RCB eventually restricted Punjab Kings to 199 for eight, sealing a 23-run victory and becoming the first side to officially qualify for the Indian Premier League 2026 playoffs.
