Signs of unrest are emerging within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following its defeat.

In the West Bengal Assembly elections, with reports suggesting growing dissatisfaction among sections of the party’s legislators and senior leaders.

According to reports, several TMC MLAs have skipped meetings convened by party chief Mamata Banerjee in recent days, fueling speculation about internal differences. Some legislators are reportedly unhappy with the influence of political consultancy firm I-PAC in party affairs and the functioning of the leadership under TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

Reports also indicate that a number of newly elected MLAs have held discussions at Kolkata’s MLA Hostel to assess the party’s future course after the electoral setback. Senior leaders are also said to be deliberating on organisational reforms aimed at rebuilding the party’s image and strengthening its structure.

The developments come amid disciplinary action by the party against two MLAs, Sandipan Saha and Ritabrata Banerjee, who were recently suspended over alleged anti-party activities.

In its notice to the legislators, the party said they had repeatedly failed to attend meetings called by the authorised leadership and had engaged in activities considered detrimental to the organisation.

The debate over the party’s future intensified further after Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy reportedly made critical remarks about the organisation’s direction. In a recent interview, Roy suggested that the party had suffered a loss of credibility over the years and faced significant challenges ahead.

Political observers note that concerns regarding the party’s internal functioning have surfaced periodically in the past. However, TMC’s successive electoral victories and the popularity of party supremo Mamata Banerjee had largely kept dissent from spilling into the public domain.

Following the Assembly election setback, however, these concerns appear to have gained greater visibility, with reports of discussions over leadership, organisational structure and the party’s future strategy.

Mamata Banerjee has dismissed attempts to portray the situation as a major crisis and accused opponents of trying to weaken the party. She has also reiterated that the Trinamool Congress will maintain strict organisational discipline and warned that action would be taken against members who violate the party line.

As speculation over internal realignments continues, the coming weeks are expected to be crucial for the TMC leadership as it seeks to contain dissent and chart a path forward after its electoral defeat.
