Australia Eye Early Advantage as Sophie Molineux Says Pressure Is on India

Australia captain Sophie Molineux believes her side can use the pressure surrounding India’s Women’s T20 World Cup campaign to their advantage when the two teams meet in a crucial Group A clash at Lord’s on Sunday.

While Australia have virtually secured a semifinal berth after winning all four of their group-stage matches, India head into the contest needing a victory to significantly improve their chances of reaching the last four.

Molineux acknowledged the contrasting situations of the two teams and said Australia would look to pile the pressure on India from the outset.

“We’re in a bit of a different situation to India. We still need to win to finish where we want to, but we know there’s a bit of pressure on them. Hopefully, we can build on that and put them under pressure quite early in the game,” Molineux said ahead of the match.

Despite Australia’s dominance in world cricket, Molineux is yet to register a series win over India since succeeding Alyssa Healy as full-time captain. Earlier this year, India stunned Australia by winning the home T20I series 2-1.

Having featured in 11 T20 Internationals against India since 2018, Molineux expects another high-intensity contest, especially with a capacity crowd set to witness the marquee encounter at Lord’s.

“Games against India are always intense. It’s a sellout crowd, so we know it’s going to be a special occasion, and we’re really looking forward to it,” she added.

Litchfield Set to Return

Australia have also received a major boost ahead of the clash, with batter Phoebe Litchfield expected to return after recovering from a calf injury.

Litchfield missed Australia’s last three matches after suffering the injury during her blistering 24-ball half-century against South Africa in the tournament opener. She has resumed full training and is in contention for selection.

“She’s looking good. She trained fully today and has been building up over the past week, so she’s available, which is really exciting for us,” Molineux said.

The return of the left-hander strengthens an Australian side that has looked formidable throughout the tournament.

The six-time champions sit comfortably atop Group A with four wins from four matches and an impressive net run rate of +4.724. Fresh from a commanding 113-run victory over Pakistan, Australia will be aiming to complete an unbeaten group-stage campaign before turning their attention to the knockout rounds.

India, meanwhile, know that overcoming the tournament favourites could prove pivotal in their quest for a place in the semifinals, setting the stage for one of the biggest matches of the group stage.
