India Hit Rock Bottom Under Gautam Gambhir, Suffer Worst-Ever T20I Defeat

England 201/7 (Phil Salt 70, Sam Curran 41*; Josh Tongue 4/28, Jofra Archer 3/29) beat India 76 all out in 11.4 overs by 125 runs.

India’s batting imploded in spectacular fashion as they were bowled out for just 76 while chasing 202 at Trent Bridge, suffering a crushing 125-run defeat against England and conceding the five-match T20I series. It was India’s biggest-ever defeat by runs in T20 internationals and the first time they lost a match in the format by more than 100 runs.

The heavy defeat also extended India’s poor run under head coach Gautam Gambhir. Led by Shreyas Iyer, India have now lost four of their last five completed T20Is, with the captain still searching for his maiden victory in the format.

Archer, Tongue Rip Through India

England’s pace attack never allowed India to settle. Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue extracted steep bounce and raw pace from the surface, dismantling India’s star-studded batting order inside the Powerplay.

India were reduced to 52 for 5 in the first six overs, effectively ending the contest before the chase had properly begun. Debutant Vaibhav Sooryavanshi briefly lifted hopes with two towering sixes against Archer and Tongue, but his entertaining 13 proved only a fleeting spark.

Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer all departed cheaply as wickets fell in rapid succession. Archer struck three crucial blows before Tongue cleaned up the lower order with figures of 4 for 28, bundling India out in just 11.4 overs.

One of the biggest talking points came during the chase when Harshit Rana was promoted ahead of established batter Shivam Dube, a move that raised questions as India’s innings unraveled.

Tactical Calls Backfire

India’s problems had begun much earlier with several questionable tactical decisions in the field.

Prince Yadav provided the breakthrough by dismissing Jos Buttler with a superb yorker before removing Harry Brook soon after, but was surprisingly taken out of the attack despite building pressure.

Similarly, Harshit Rana, after dismissing Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton off successive deliveries to stand on a hat-trick, was also withdrawn before completing the over. England capitalised on the respite, rebuilding through Phil Salt before launching a late assault.

Salt overcame a cautious start—including a maiden over from Arshdeep Singh—to hammer 70 off 44 deliveries, while Sam Curran’s unbeaten 41 from 24 balls powered England to 201 for 7. The hosts plundered 89 runs in the final eight overs after India had briefly pulled the game back.

England Seal Series

England’s commanding victory handed them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series after the opener was washed out.

While India’s bowlers created enough opportunities to restrict England to a chaseable total, inconsistent bowling changes allowed the hosts to regain momentum. The batting collapse that followed exposed India’s struggles against genuine pace and bounce.

With two matches remaining, India face a daunting challenge to restore confidence and avoid further embarrassment, while England will head into the remainder of the series brimming with momentum after one of their most dominant T20I victories over India.
