10,000-km Rain Band From India to South Korea Signals Monsoon at Peak Strength

A gigantic rain band stretching nearly 7,000-10,000 kilometres from northern India across the Himalayas, China and up to South Korea has been captured in the latest satellite imagery, marking one of the strongest phases of the 2026 southwest monsoon.

The vast cloud corridor, known as the monsoon convergence zone, has formed as moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean interact with weather systems across Asia. The result is an almost unbroken belt of dense clouds and widespread rainfall extending across much of the continent.

The active monsoon pattern has triggered exceptionally heavy rainfall across India, with the country receiving 170-180% of its normal daily monsoon rainfall over the past two days—the highest so far this season.

Weather experts describe the ongoing spell as one of the most intense monsoon bursts of the year, with rainfall far exceeding normal levels across several regions.

Satellite images show thick cloud cover blanketing central, northern and eastern India before stretching across the Himalayan region into China and further towards the Korean Peninsula.

Such extensive cloud bands develop when the monsoon trough remains highly active, allowing warm, moisture-rich air to converge over a vast area. As this air rises and cools, it forms towering rain clouds that produce widespread showers and thunderstorms across thousands of kilometres.

The fresh spell comes as a major boost after an uneven start to the monsoon that left several states with rainfall deficits. The latest rains are expected to significantly improve seasonal rainfall totals, especially across north and central India.

Heavy rainfall has already lashed Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR and parts of Rajasthan, while eastern and northeastern states continue to witness intense showers under the influence of low-pressure systems moving inland from the Bay of Bengal.

At the same time, the prolonged wet spell has increased the risk of flash floods, waterlogging, landslides and rising river levels, particularly in the Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, where authorities remain on alert.

The extraordinary satellite view also highlights the scale of Asia’s interconnected weather systems. Rather than being confined to India, the southwest monsoon is part of a much larger atmospheric circulation linking weather patterns from the Arabian Sea to East Asia, influencing rainfall across multiple countries.

Forecasts suggest the monsoon will stay active through the week, bringing more widespread rain that could further narrow India’s seasonal rainfall deficit, replenish reservoirs and provide a timely boost to the ongoing kharif sowing season.
