UK Cabinet Reshuffle: Three Indian-Origin Labour MPs Get Key Government Roles

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a Cabinet reshuffle, with three Indian-origin Labour MPs—Kanishka Narayan, Satvir Kaur, and Harpreet Uppal—receiving prominent roles in the new government. The appointments further strengthen the representation of Indian-origin lawmakers in senior positions.

Kanishka Narayan has been promoted as Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, while Satvir Kaur has been appointed Minister for Equalities with additional responsibilities in the Home Office. Harpreet Uppal has joined the government as an Assistant Whip, a role that involves coordinating parliamentary business and ensuring party discipline during key votes.

The reshuffle also sees Uma Kumaran, a Labour MP of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage, take charge as a junior minister in the Foreign Office. With these appointments, the government’s front bench now includes two Hindu and two Sikh ministers.

Meanwhile, senior Indian-origin politicians Seema Malhotra, formerly the Indo-Pacific minister, and Preet Kaur Gill, the former junior health minister, have moved back to the backbenches following the reshuffle. Lisa Nandy, whose father was born in Kolkata, has retained her Cabinet position as Culture Secretary.

Who is Kanishka Narayan?

Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Kanishka Narayan moved to Wales with his family at the age of 12. He studied at Eton College, the University of Oxford, and Stanford University before entering politics.

Narayan was elected as the Labour MP for Vale of Glamorgan in the 2024 general election. After serving in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, he has now been elevated to the newly created post of Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, serving jointly in the Cabinet Office and the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade.

Who is Satvir Kaur?

Satvir Kaur, Labour MP for Southampton Test, entered Parliament in 2024. The daughter of Punjabi immigrants who ran a saree business in Southampton, Kaur has built her political career around community engagement and equality issues.

She has been appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Minister for Equalities) in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, while also serving in the Home Office. Her responsibilities include equalities, safeguarding, and tackling violence against women and girls.

Before this promotion, she served as a Parliamentary Secretary in the Cabinet Office and returned to ministerial duties earlier this year after maternity leave.

Who is Harpreet Uppal?

Labour MP Harpreet Uppal, who represents Huddersfield, has been appointed Assistant Whip. In this role, she will help manage the government’s legislative agenda and coordinate Labour MPs during parliamentary proceedings.

Uppal was first elected to Parliament in 2024. Before becoming an MP, she worked on Andy Burnham’s successful Greater Manchester mayoral campaign in 2017 and has since emerged as a rising figure within the Labour Party.
