Bhiwandi Building Collapse: 9 Dead, Rescue Teams Search for Survivors Under Debris

At least nine people have died after a portion of a four-storey building collapsed in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi on Thursday night. Several others are feared trapped under the rubble as rescue teams continue operations at the site.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police and emergency services have been deployed to carry out search and rescue efforts.

According to preliminary information, a large section of the building collapsed while repair or construction-related work was underway. Officials said the structure had already been vacated after being declared unsafe due to its poor condition, but some workers may have been present when the collapse occurred.

Rescue Operation Underway

The NDRF rescued at least one woman from the debris and rushed her to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Rescue personnel are continuing efforts to locate and evacuate anyone who may still be trapped.

The death toll initially stood at three but increased to nine as rescue operations progressed and more bodies were recovered from the debris.

Dangerous Building Declared Unsafe Earlier

The collapsed structure was identified as Kohinoor Apartment, according to reports. The building had reportedly been declared dangerous by the local municipal authorities before the incident. Bhiwandi Mayor Narayan Chowdhary said several buildings in the city have been classified as unsafe and urged residents living in such structures to vacate them immediately.

“There are many such buildings in Bhiwandi that have been declared dangerous. While we are trying to rescue those trapped, I would advise people living in such buildings to vacate them immediately,” he said.

Authorities are continuing the search operation while assessing the condition of nearby structures to prevent any further risk.
