Virat Kohli’s Birthday-Eve Masterclass Powers India to Dominant Win Over New Zealand
Virat Kohli delivered a memorable performance on the eve of his 38th birthday, smashing 74 off just 51 balls to guide India to a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening ODI in Auckland on Wednesday, November 4. Chasing a rain-revised target of 143, India reached the finish line in just 22.4 overs.
However, the victory was built on an impressive display by India’s young fast-bowling unit, which dismantled New Zealand’s batting lineup for 185 in 40.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh led the attack with four wickets, while Gurnoor Brar picked up three and Anshul Kamboj claimed two.
India suffered an early setback when Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a six-ball duck, caught by Mitchell Santner off Kyle Jamieson. With the ball moving under favourable conditions, New Zealand looked capable of putting pressure on the visitors.
But Kohli and Shubman Gill steadied the innings with a crucial 113-run partnership off 104 deliveries. The duo displayed patience and composure before shifting gears following rain interruptions that reduced the contest to 32 overs.
Kohli took charge as the revised target demanded a quicker approach, attacking the New Zealand bowlers with trademark pulls and boundaries. He eventually departed for 74, with India needing only a few more runs to secure victory. Despite losing Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer late in the chase, India completed the win comfortably, with Naman Dhir hitting the winning boundary.
Earlier, India’s pace attack delivered a commanding performance despite the absence of senior fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, while Prasidh Krishna was unavailable due to injury.
Arshdeep Singh provided the initial breakthroughs, restricting New Zealand to 45/2 in the first 10 overs. Gurnoor Brar impressed with his pace, height and bounce, dismissing Tim Seifert and captain Tom Latham.
Anshul Kamboj was equally effective in the middle overs, finishing with figures of 2/22 from 10 overs and delivering 46 dot balls. India’s fielding further strengthened their dominance, with Rohit Sharma producing a sharp run-out of Daryl Mitchell and Kohli taking an outstanding catch at second slip.
Although Blair Tickner provided some late resistance with three sixes in Arshdeep’s final over, New Zealand could manage only 185 before being bowled out.
The opening ODI offered several positives for India, particularly the emergence of young fast bowlers capable of delivering under pressure. While Kohli’s birthday-eve knock grabbed the headlines, the collective bowling and fielding effort laid the foundation for a convincing series-opening victory.
