Iran Claims Attacks on 2 US Vessels, 8 Tankers and 10 Ships in Gulf, Hormuz

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have claimed attacks on two US vessels and eight oil tankers in the Gulf, saying the strikes were carried out in retaliation for US attacks on five Iranian oil tankers.

Iranian state media, citing a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported that the group also attacked a ship attempting to pass through what it described as a “prohibited and unsafe” area of the Strait of Hormuz.

US says five Iranian tankers destroyed

The US military said it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday, September 8, following what Washington described as attacks by Tehran on US warships.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on X that its forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers after the IRGC targeted a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles twice over two days.

According to CENTCOM, the vessels targeted were M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1 and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman, along with M/T Derya near Kharg Island.

Rubio warns of further strikes

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that Washington would carry out additional strikes against Iranian oil tankers if attacks on US naval vessels continue.

“Iran continues to try to hit US naval ships, and for every time they do that or try to do that, they’re going to lose tankers,” Rubio told reporters during a visit to Colombia.

The warning comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate, with attacks involving naval vessels and commercial oil carriers raising concerns over maritime security in the Gulf and the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Jordan intercepts Iranian missiles

Following the US strikes, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting US bases in Jordan.

Jordanian air-defence systems intercepted 18 of the 20 ballistic missiles launched from Iranian territory, the country’s state news agency reported, citing the armed forces.

The remaining two missiles landed in unpopulated areas, and no casualties were reported, according to the military.

Israel orders British consulate action

Separately, Israel has informed the British consulate in East Jerusalem that it must close and that its diplomats will lose their accreditation within 30 days, according to a Reuters report citing an Israeli official.

British representatives involved in a US-led Gaza coordination mission in Israel, along with British diplomats based in Ramallah, have reportedly been given seven days to leave.

More than 1,000 UK flights cancelled

More than 1,000 flights across the UK were cancelled on Tuesday after a technical problem affected the country’s air traffic control system.

Flight-tracking website Flightradar24 reported widespread disruption at airports across Britain after air traffic control provider NATS experienced the technical glitch.

NATS later said engineers had identified and fixed the problem. However, the full impact of the disruption was expected to continue as airlines worked to clear delays and cancellations.

Trump praises Germany’s AfD

US President Donald Trump also praised the performance of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the AfD’s result as a “really big” victory and attributed its rise to opposition to Germany’s immigration policies.

He said the party was “on the rise” as he criticised what he described as Germany’s “horrible Immigration rules and regulations.”

Iran-US tensions remain high

The latest developments mark another escalation in the confrontation between Iran and the United States. Iran has claimed retaliatory strikes against US and commercial vessels, while Washington has threatened further action against Iranian oil shipments.

With the Strait of Hormuz remaining at the centre of the confrontation, disruptions to shipping could have wider implications for global energy markets and crude oil prices.
